Fantastic post - Using it for a live business case and also, sharing it with my team.

Great post! It resonates because I'm literally in the middle of a similar situation. We have a business case but the revenue is 1% of the largest business in the company. There are other intangible benefits that are less quantifiable - like not losing incumbency to an emerging competitor, getting recognized on industry-specific leaderboards, discovering unique uses of the product etc. Your list of questions gave me new ideas to reframe some of my logic and presentation of the problem.

Damn, I wish I’d read this article ten years ago.

I’ve always assumed this was just classic imposter syndrome, but at times I had doubts about that.

For many years now, I’ve been doing essentially one thing: overperforming with small teams in the nonprofit and cultural space. Projects, systems, growth.

From the outside, no one really sees the constraints we’ve worked through, the complexity of the systems we’ve built, or how all of that fits into a longer-term strategic vision. Or how much work it takes to make everything look simple and sustainable with just three people behind the scenes, for example.

You’re absolutely right: it’s time to start learning new external skills and my Substack is a conscious step in that direction. Thank you so much for the article.

This is so good, I plan to put it into practice.

Along the lines of the book - The Mom Test - which is about fiding problems worth solving. Best read of the month, I would day. Plus, lots of communication level insights around expressing things to the team and boss and what not.
