Most people suck at managing up. They waste their manager's time with too much (or too little) information. Here’s how to give the right amount of context.
Soooo damn good. This is a rare skill in employees and could make such a massive difference in organizational efficiency and swift execution if more could master it. I recommend your newsletter to everyone I talk to. No lie.
Thank you for this read, my communication at work has improved a lot mostly because of your insights. I have realised there are many cases where I do provide unnecessary context 😃 and this article has taught me how to avoid that
It's amazing how much thought and effort goes into effective communication. Makes me admire and appreciate teammates who do it well even more. This breakdown is a helpful worksheet for the rest of us. I'm going to share it in our upcoming BCM.club newsletter, thank you for writing it ❤️
Super cool post! I think I’ve always known all of this in the back of my mind but reading the intro about going haywire made me resonate and read further.
Have shared this article with my direct team and will take this approach forward with my own manager, specially with skip level managers.
Sharing this with all those who struggle to manage up, which is most of the people :) . I wish someone shared this with me instead of those vague "Get better at managing up" feedbacks.
I had heard your name when I was following Gagan’s journey to Maven. I was curious as to why Gagan partnered with you but never spent time to go deep.
After reading your posts, I can totally understand why. Your newsletter especially this one, is one of the best ones I have read so far. It should be a part of business communication class. It tells me I have so much room to improve myself.
This is so timely! Was just thinking about how I can better manage up. I find my manager tends to be a bit slow to respond or act on things I need her to review. Rather than wait for her I decided to go ahead and now we have a call set up to finalise the entire thing. I think working as a freelancer and as a lone specialist working with several cross functional teams has really helped me as well.
I just reread this for the 3rd time since it had been posted, and still rediscovering new points that I can apply at my daily work. This is priceless wisdom. I can't thank enough!

This means a lot, thank you Michelle 🙏

This goes direct to my head rent-free. Awesome tips, very actionable and briefly explained.

Loved this. I cannot wait to implement #8 with my team!
Thanks for sharing these tips :)
